Take a step back from what you’re doing now to reassess your marketing plan, learn tips and tricks to take the pain out of writing great copy, and navigate the world of social networks to spread the word about your film events. You’ll return to work with updated skills, fresh ideas and motivation… all for less than the price of an advert!
Who is the course for?
Staff of independent cinemas, film festivals, film societies, non-traditional exhibitors and support agencies involved in marketing or communications – whether you’re just starting out, looking for a refresher, or wanting to keep up with the latest developments. Applicants should ideally have 3 years’ or more experience working in the film industry.
What will the course cover?
- Planning and implementing a marketing strategy
- Writing copy that sells more tickets
- Understanding social media – including strategising, planning a campaign, case studies and practical tips
How will it be taught?
The course will be taught through talks, practical exercises and group discussion. You will also have the opportunity to network with your peers working in similar jobs from across the UK.
Who are the trainers?
Ros Fry started her career stuffing envelopes at The Commonwealth Institute, a museum in London about non-western culture. She worked her way up to become head of marketing, press and sponsorship before moving on to mainstream culture as Senior Press Officer at the Southbank Centre. Turning freelance she worked in arts marketing, journalism and academia. Moving to the South West in 1994 she devised the first arts marketing courses at Dartington College of arts and dozens of CPD courses. She has trained three thousand students, artists and arts managers, run two literary festivals and curated a creative industries exhibition. Ros is a qualified Relational Dynamics Coach and Action Learning facilitator and was nominated for the Woman of the Year award for her work in making the arts more accessible. Ros has a first in BA Hons Media Studies from the University of Westminster.
Rachael Castell is a director, producer and interactive consultant. She manages ‘Support your local Cinema’ – a pan-European initiative to engage new audiences with specialised film through the use of digital and social media. And, she is currently in pre-production on environmental feature documentary The Congo Project, as well as developing two short films about sustainability and art. Until December 2009, Rachael was English National Opera’s Interactive Producer, where she developed a long term interactive audience development strategy for the company, involving social networking and blogging. Prior to her appointment at ENO, Rachael worked as the Head of New Media for Adventure Pictures (Sally Potter’s production company), and previous to that spent four years as Producer of the East End Film Festival.
Fees:
£100 + VAT = £120. Fees include lunch and refreshments.
The real cost of a place on the course is £303, but the fees are being subsidised by Skillset for UK film industry professionals.
Bursaries are available towards fees, travel and childcare subsidies for people from not-for-profit film exhibition organisations with an annual turnover of £200K or less who would not otherwise be able to attend. Please see the Bursary Form for information and to apply.
Travel and accommodation:
One Drummond Gate is one minute walk from Pimlico tube, five minutes’ walk from Vauxhall station or ten minutes’ walk from Victoria mainline station.

Disabled access:
There is street level access to the building, a lift to the training room and disabled toilets. Please let the ICO know about any access requirements you have. We have an access fund for this course so will endeavour to provide for additional requirements (eg. alternate print formats, BSL signers…). Please give us as much notice as possible to make suitable arrangements.
