The crash course in the business of all things film programming returns for its thirteenth year in partnership with the BFI London Film Festival. This is a unique opportunity for professionals working in independent cinemas, film festivals, film societies and pop-ups to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding. Accredited by Creative Skillset the course provides practical skills, knowledge and inspiration that can be put to immediate use when participants return to work.
Who is the course for?
UK based professionals working in independent cinemas, film festivals, cross arts venues, film societies, alternative venues (such as pop-ups) and support agencies working with these types of organisations. Participants will ideally have at least three years’, continuous or non continuous, experience of working within the film industry and currently hold a role in management, programming, education, marketing, administration or fundraising.
What does the course cover?
- Introduction to film distribution and exhibition: how films reach the screen
- Programming in different contexts: cinemas, festivals, film societies and “event cinema”
- Research, rights clearance, formats and negotiating terms
- Specialised programming: archive film, shorts, artists’ moving image
- Broadening audiences: young people, deaf and disabled audiences
- Marketing and PR for specialised film
- Careers advice and networking

How is the course taught?
This is an intensive one week course comprising talks, practical exercises, networking and film screenings and is taught by a team of engaging experts and inspiring guest speakers working at the forefront of the film industry. Participants also undertake a project in groups, presenting a programming plan on the final day incorporating everything they’ve learnt on the course.
The course leaders are Catharine Des Forges, the ICO’s Director, and David Sin, the ICO’s Head of Cinemas.

Fees include lunch and refreshments on the five training days and the costs of any compulsory evening activities.

Trafalgar Events is located 2 minutes’ walk from Charing Cross Rail and Underground and Embankment Underground stations. The nearest car park is located is the Savoy Adelphi Car Park, Savoy Place, WC2N 6BL.
BFI Southbank
The BFI Southbank is under Waterloo Bridge, between the National Theatre and the Royal Festival Hall. It is a 10 – 15 minute walk from Trafalgar Events via the Hungerford Bridge over the river Thames. The nearest mainline and Underground stations are Waterloo (5-10 minutes walk) and Charing Cross (10 – 15 mins) and Embankment (10-15 mins). Nearby parking is available under the Hayward Gallery, Royal National Theatre or Jubilee Gardens.

Accessibility
Trafalgar Events is set over five floors of a Grade II listed Georgian town house which is accessible for wheelchair users. There is a ramp entrance from the street to the ground floor reception area and a there is a lift to all other levels. Accessible toilet facilities are located on the ground floor. Training will take place on the first and second levels.
