BFI Film Academy Labs are online events for 16 – 25 year olds to gain industry insight and get professional advice and support to develop their own film programming and film making practices. Programmed by the Young Film Programmers’ Network (South East) they are delivered as practical masterclasses, workshops and networking sessions.
About the session
This month we’re delighted to be joined by Katie Sinclair, London-based independent Producer and Development Executive, to share her journey into short film producing and give advice to aspiring young producers. In conversation with BFI NETWORK’s Tom Wightman, Katie will discuss the importance of the producer’s role in shedding light on untold stories and amplifying the voices of emerging filmmakers.
As producer, Katie recently completed THE LAST DAYS (wri/dir. Dipo Baruwa-Etti) – starring BRIDGERTON’s Adjoa Andoh and STEVE MCQUEEN’S SMALL AXE’s Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn, which premiered at the Oscar-qualifying Rhode Island Film Festival in August 2021. Filmed during the pandemic, it will also play at multiple other Oscar and Bafta qualifying festivals including Edinburgh, Aesthetica and more to be announced. The film was funded by BFI Network and BBC Drama commissioning
Her previous short film SIGNS (wri/dir Yero Timi-Biu) won the Youth Jury Prize at the Academy Award-qualifying Encounters Film Festival, playing at many more festivals at home and abroad. Previous shorts have won awards and played at festivals internationally. As a producer, she is committed to shedding a light on untold stories and amplifying the voices of emerging filmmakers.
As a Development Executive at Blueprint Pictures (Emma, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, In Bruges, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) she sources and develops projects for the production company’s slate. She has worked in production and development for BBC Films, BBC Studios, Sugar Films, Disney and Lionsgate. Katie has been a BFI NETWORK x BAFTA CREW producer since 2019.
