Larissa Shepitko is arguably the greatest post-war female filmmaker and certainly one of the finest modern Russian directors.
She is sadly neglected because of her tragic early death at the age of 40 in a car accident and a relatively small output of films. The retrospective features all four of her completed features culminating in the astonishing Ascent, fascinating collaborative work and also two loving tributes by her famous husband Elem Klimov, including the posthumous realisation of her final project.
Presented by GNER 18th Leeds International Film Festival in partnership with The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
