About the artists
Phoebe Boswell was shortlisted for the Art Foundation’s Animation Fellowship, 2012 and was the first recipient of the Sky Academy Arts Scholarship in 2014. Her Guardian / British Council commissioned short film Dear Mr Shakespeare, written, performed and animated by Boswell, and directed by Shola Amoo, was nominated for Best International Short at Sundance 2017. Boswell was shortlisted for and awarded the ‘Special Prize’, by Future Generation Art Prize 2017, and was recently the recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship.
Beverley Bennett is an artist, whose work has been shown nationally, venues include the Bluecoat, Liverpool, Global Studio’s and The National Portrait Gallery, London. Bennett is also the Founder and Co-Director of London-based art collective TBC, who self-publish a 12-page magazine and work on exhibition projects that interrogate individual members creative identities and explore the potential of collaborative works.
Nicola Thomas (AKA NT) was awarded the Augustus Martin Prize and the Royal College of Art Graduate Jealous Print Prize in 2013. She was also the recipient of the London Print Studio New Graduate Award 2013. Thomas has shown her films in Paris, Berlin and Miami. Exhibitions include Multiplied at Christie’s; Carousel at Aspex Gallery; and Parallax, at CG Projects. Nicola’s prints are included in the V&A Special Print Collection, and form part of the RCA Special Print Collection. Her work has been included in numerous group shows the most recent being Untitled (2017) at New Art Exchange.
Jay Bernard is a programmer for BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival. They are the author of English Breakfast (2013) and Your Sign Is Cuckoo, Girl (2008); their work has been featured in magazines such as Magma, Dazed & Confused, Ms Lexia and Poetry London. They have performed at festivals such as Homotopia, Queer Up North, Spit Lit and Latitude. Bernard was the first Poet in Residence at the London -based George Padmore Institute and recently won the 2018 Ted Hughes award for new poetry for the performance Surge: Side A, a multimedia sequence exploring the 1981 New Cross fire.
About Philomela’s Chorus
Philomela’s Chorus is a visual arts commissioning and exhibition platform. Primarily focused on shifting visions and activating new voices from emergent and early career BAME women and non-binary artist-filmmakers. Using the Greek myth of Philomela as a springboard, the aim is to promote critical dialogues with communities of interest and audiences. The commissioners are: Eric Collins an energetic executive in the digital industry, Dr Michael J. Prokopow a cultural historian and curator, and Karen Alexander a curator, writer and educator. Producer, Jacqui Davies, is a London-based artist film and moving image producer and curator.
