The Lexi Cinema, London is seeking a new Duty Manager to ensure the smooth running of the cinema and a great audience overall experience.

This is a vital role within our small and very busy cinema team. Our Duty Managers are paramount to the smooth running of The Lexi, to the happiness of our audiences and volunteer team, and to ourhigh standards of film presentation. You’ll be a problem solver, maintain high standards, and support our volunteer Front of House team.

Role responsibilities

As the Duty Manager, whilst running a shift you are responsible for:

  • smooth running of the front of house operation, in line with the Lexi’s policies and procedures
  • delivering private hires and special events to specification including looking after clients/speakers
  • monitoring the volunteer rota and arranging cover in case of last minute shift cancellation
  • supporting the volunteer on duty
  • security of the building
  • reconciliation of monies
  • providing excellent customer service
  • responsible serving of alcohol at the Lexi bar
  • digital projection and other technical set-up for public screenings, including live events, and for private hire
  • customer admin including monitoring our info@ email and our booking line
  • representing the Lexi and promoting initiatives such as our membership and additional fundraising projects
  • the cleanliness of the building, including bar and kiosk equipment
  • reporting end of night figures to ComScore
  • re-stocking and maintaining displays in the bar and kiosk

Additional Responsibilities
In addition to running shifts, you will also be given additional tasks to support the running of the business, for example, doing weekly health and safety checks, receiving and putting away deliveries; creating/amending playlists, keeping the readograph message and film posters up to date, ordering stock, stock control, or training staff. As far as possible, you should complete these during your shifts, during shows. If necessary you will be given extra hours to complete these tasks.

Communication outside of work hours: we’ll try to keep this to a minimum, but we need you to be responsive to emails about events you’re managing or when we’re trying to arrange cover. It is your responsibility to read through briefing emails about events you’re managing, before your shift starts.

Cover shifts
The Lexi is open 363 days a year so you are expected to be flexible when it comes to providing cover for other managers if they are ill or on holiday.
You are expected to be contactable and must provide an email address and mobile phone number so we can contact you if needed.
If there are any days which you cannot work due to other commitments please let us know. Once the rota has been confirmed you are responsible for organising cover for any shifts you can’t do.

Projection
As a Duty Manager you are also responsible for the projection of the films we show and to start them on time. You will monitor sound levels and picture quality throughout the screening. You’ll also monitor temperatures throughout the building but especially in the auditorium for the purpose of customer comfort and equipment performance.

Hires
At the Lexi we are open outside of our public opening hours, for private parties, corporate functions, and even weddings – in fact events are a major revenue stream for us. If you are running an event you will receive the event schedule in advance and need to make sure you are well prepared.

Person specifications

Experience

  • Experience of managing a team – essential
  • Front of House experience, preferably within an arts venue – essential
  • Experience working with volunteers in an arts or third sector environment – desirable
  • Digital projection – desirable

Skills, knowledge and attributes – essential, demonstrable

  • Love of film
  • An enthusiastic, hospitable leader
  • The ability to manage workflow and prioritise quickly, and to deal effectively with changingrequirements
  • Ability to provide exceptional standards of customer service
  • Ability to be trustworthy and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work collaboratively and as an effective team player
