The BFI is recruiting for a Digital Media Specialist

The BFI is looking for a Digital Media Specialist who will provide a range of technical functions on exclusively audiovisual digital media – with a focus on video distributed on the internet – to meet the BFI National Archive’s digital acquisition, preservation and access objectives as part of the Our Screen Heritage project.

This is a Fixed Term Contract position until 31 March 2026.

Our Screen Heritage will focus on collecting contemporary screen works. It is the third chapter of the BFI’s screen heritage story, bringing the BFI national collections up to date to preserve the story of moving-image as it moves into the digital/online era.

Key responsibilities

  • Operate all technical equipment relating to performing digital preservation and access operations on exclusively audiovisual digital media, including workstations, transcoding software, Quality Control tools and associated data storage peripherals
  • Assist with and advise on specifications, quality control and verification processes in collaboration with colleagues, to meet agreed quality standards and deadlines
  • Provide regular and disciplined media management for central and local storage
  • Utilise a wide range of software based applications, both open-source and proprietary, to meet acquisition, preservation and access requirements

The BFI is seeking candidates with: 

  • Experience of working with a wide range of digital audiovisual formats, equipment, and software
  • An understanding of digital preservation principles as applied to audiovisual files
  • Can demonstrate an understanding of relevant digital audiovisual formats including (but not limited to) Apple ProRes Quicktime, H.264 MP4, WebM, FFV1 Matroska
  • Ability to recognise and diagnose technical problems with digital media and take steps to remediate
