Kōki, Jack Lowden, Takehiro Hira, Tim Roth
Directed by John Maclean (whose 2015 feature debut, revisionist Western Slow West previously featured at Screening Days) and starring Tim Roth and Jack Lowden, period survival thriller Tornado follows a young woman who faces off against a gang of ruthless criminals.
1790s: In Britain with her father’s travelling samurai puppet show, determined Tornado (Kōki) steals gold from a local gang in hopes of funding a new life for her family. But she hasn’t banked on the vicious revenge of gang leader Sugarman (Roth) and his son, Little Sugar (Lowden). What follows is a thrilling, adrenaline-fuelled race against time, as Tornado desperately tries to avoid a violent demise, deploying her father’s training to leave a bloody trail of devastation in her wake.
Both reinventing and paying homage to classic samurai films, with Robbie Ryan overseeing cinematography of an imagined rugged historic Britain, Tornado promises to be an unforgettable and exhilarating tour-de-force, showing at Screening Days shortly after its international Glasgow Film Festival premiere.
