Ritesh Batra – director of 2013’s acclaimed The Lunchbox – casts Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling, Harriet Walter, Emily Mortimer and Michelle Dockery in this much-anticipated new adaptation of Julian Barnes’s Man Booker Prize-winning 2011 novel, The Sense of an Ending.
Tony Webster (Broadbent), divorced and retired, leads a reclusive and relatively quiet life. One day, he learns that the mother of his university girlfriend, Veronica, left in her will a diary kept by his best friend, who dated Veronica after she and Tony parted ways. Tony’s quest to recover the diary, now in Veronica’s possession, forces him to revisit his flawed recollections of his friends and of his younger self.
Filmed partly in the present and partly in flashback, with the main characters’ current and previous selves performed by its excellent British cast, Batra’s film promises to be a superbly well-crafted, intelligent and suspenseful meditation on ageing, memory and regret.
