The new film from Thomas Vinterberg (Festen) is a change of pace from last year’s sumptuous Far From the Madding Crowd remake.
The Commune, which will be competing for the Silver Bear at this year’s Berlinale, sees Vinterberg collaborating with screenwriter Tobias Lindberg (A War, A Hijacking) to present the story of Erik and Anna, an academic couple who set up a Danish commune in bohemian 1970s Copenhagen.
What follows is a compelling clash between their personal desires and the dream of communal solidarity; as their ideal of tolerant socialist living is eclipsed by an earth-shattering love affair, putting their relationship, their community and the commune to its greatest test.
