Queen & Slim is the hotly anticipated feature film directorial debut from two-time Grammy winner Melina Matsoukas, director of HBO’s Insecure, episodes of Aziz Ansari’s Netflix series Master of None and Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’ video; as well as the feature screenwriting debut of Lena Waithe, known for her superb writing and acting in Master of None (including winning an Emmy for co-writing the outstanding Thanksgiving episode) and her own original series The Chi.
Oscar nominated British actor Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) and Jodie Turner-Smith (The Neon Demon) star as a couple on their first date who become fugitives after an altercation with the police. As the film unfolds, the couple unwittingly become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for African Americans across the country.
Within a narrative that’s clearly reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde, Matsoukas tackles the pain of systemic racism and continued police brutality towards African Americans in the States, whilst also telling a beautiful, powerful and thoroughly modern black love story.
