This genre-bending film from Japanese anime director Kenji Kamiyama is set in a not-too-distant machine-driven future and boasts an imaginative and spirited young heroine.
Kokone should be diligently studying for her university entrance exams, but just can’t seem to stay awake. Aside from taking up precious study time, her napping is filled with weird dreams featuring warring machines that hint at long-dormant family secrets. She can’t ask her hipster mechanic father, who’s always busy with his work, what these visions may infer, but is desperate to find out: why are her dreams leading her at once closer to and further away from her family?
Like all the best anime, the film revels in multilayered fantasy to show how sometimes opposites – waking and dreaming, the past and the future – are far more intertwined than they appear…
