Paddy Considine, Jodie Whittaker, Paul Popplewell
Actor-director-writer Paddy Considine’s searing Journeyman, the follow-up to his award-winning 2011 feature debut Tyrannosaur, sees him star as a journeyman boxer.
Matty Burton (Considine) is a middleweight boxing world champion. Nearing the end of his career, he needs to make money before he gets out of the game to secure a home and future for his wife Emma (Jodie Whittaker) and their baby daughter.
Facing a brash, controversy-courting opponent in his final bout, it proves a titanic battle and at home after it ends, Matty collapses on the living room floor. When he awakens from a coma, the real fight begins. Suffering from memory loss and personality changes, Matty must try to piece a new life and a new self together as his previous world disintegrates.
A powerfully moving story of loss, identity and adversity, Considine’s film – shot on location in Sheffield, Nottingham, Doncaster and surrounding areas – is rooted in place, authentic, and eloquent on the physical losses and emotional difficulties but also gains that may result from life-changing injury.
