Woody Allen’s latest is a glittering romantic comedy, set in during the Golden Age of Hollywood, bearing comparison to his earlier classic Annie Hall.
The story sees Bobby (a perfectly cast Jesse Eisenberg), a young Jewish New Yorker who heads west to Los Angeles in search of a start in the film industry. Once there, Bobby settles in with his uncle Phil (Steve Carell), a film agent who begins to introduce his nephew to the glamour of Hollywood, and his beautiful young assistant Vonnie (Kristen Stewart).
What ensues is a classic love triangle with Bobby falling for Vonnie’s charms, only to find out that she’s otherwise involved. Amidst Allen’s trademark awkward comedy is Eisenberg’s flawless capture of neurotic mannerisms together with an engaging verbal dexterity. Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro’s luscious framing captures a melancholic art deco tale of bittersweet nostalgia and mistimed lovers
