Ingvar Sigurdsson, Ida Mekkin Hlynsdottir
New from Hlynur Pálmason, A White, White Day is the director’s second feature and arrives two years after his festival favourite and award-winning Winter Brothers. The film was screened at Cannes 2019 and has since been described as ‘visually arresting and emotionally rewarding’ (Screen International).
The soundtrack by British composer Edmund Finnis is as haunting as the story on screen; Ingimundur (Ingvar Sigurðsson), a retired police commissioner who is dealing with the tragic death of his wife. When he learns that she was having an affair before she died, his life is turned upside down into a visually stunning and soul-wrenchingly cathartic tale. The relationship with his young granddaughter Salka (Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir) is given the most screen time; the scenes which – never overdone – are always very authentic and touching.
A White, White Day was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and selected as the Icelandic entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.
