Diego Quemada-Diez’s (Ken Loach’s camera assistant) debut feature follows three Guatemalan teenagers as they journey across perilous Mexico to illegally cross the border in to the US, in search of a better life.
Busking for money, and travelling on the roofs of trains, to try and reach their destination, the teenagers encounter numerous barriers in the form of border police, human traffickers, kidnappers and drug lords.
Sticking to Loach’s realist directing style using improvisational techniques and largely non-professional actors, The Golden Dream is a suspenseful gripping drama.
