This intense love story was screened in Competition at Cannes this year. Mon Roi, from French actress and director Maïwenn (Polisse), stars Emmanuelle Bercot (winner of the Best Actress prize at Cannes) and Vincent Cassel.
It’s an intoxicating tale, taking as its subject the 10-year romance between two 40-something Parisians who have had a tempestuous relationship; criminal lawyer Tony (Bercot) and charismatic Georgio (Cassel).
In a rehab centre after an accident, Tony looks back on their times together. Why did they fall for each other? Who, really, is this man that she loved so deeply?
Similarly to Abdellatif Kechiche’s 2013 Blue is the Warmest Colour, part of Mon Roi‘s emotional power comes from a tight focus on its protagonists, who are filmed at close quarters as they eat, talk, laugh, have sex and passionately argue, making it an immensely memorable film; funny, charming and moving in equal measure.
