Helen is an auspicious feature debut by the award winning short film directors Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor.
Helen is a troubled young woman who, on being released from care, volunteers to impersonate a missing teenager in a police reconstruction. Helen longs for the security and love she has missed out on, and gradually begins to immerse herself in the role taking on the missing girl’s life in what may be an attempt to find out what happened to Joy, or a search for her own identity.
An eerie and psychologically insightful film, the complexities and impact of ‘playing’ another on Helen’s life are fascinating and skilfully drawn. Newcomer Annie Townsend impresses with her understated performance in the title role.
