This confidently made, stylish directorial debut has impeccable indie credentials with the veteran Christine Vachon as producer and Paul Dano (Let There Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine) and Zooey Deschanel (Assassination of Jesse James, All the Real Girls) as its stars.
Dano plays Brian, a mattress salesman with a burning desire to adopt a Chinese baby perhaps in an attempt to escape his high-achieving, repressed family life. After a new customer sends his daughter to collect an order, however, Brian is smitten and his plans for the future are sidetracked much to his family’s chagrin.
Fresh and lively, this is an enjoyable and entertaining take on love, commitment and family life. Dano and Deschanel as the quirky couple at its core are likeable leads and there is able support from John Goodman as Deschanel’s blustering but tender Dad.
