Cloud 9 opens with a graphic scene involving a man and woman in their later years having passionate sex, setting the tone for an emotionally upfront but endearing film.
Inge, a seamstress, lives happily with her older husband Werner, who spends his days distracted by his pastime watching steam trains.
Upon delivering a pair of trousers to a regular customer, Karl, Inge tumbles into his arms. Her conflicting feelings, in turn infatuated, guilty and belligerent, are palpably felt.
This seemingly spontaneous act leads to an affair around which the drama unfolds.
Improvised by the actors from an idea developed with director Andreas Dresen, Cloud 9 is an honest and unashamedly frank meditation on the magnificence and madness of love.
