When You’re Strange, the first feature-length documentary about illustrious rock quartet The Doors, uses historic and previously unseen footage of the band to provide new insight into the revolutionary impact of its music and legacy.
Directed by Tom DiCillo and narrated by Johnny Depp, the film is a riveting account of the history of both the band and America from 1965 up to Jim Morrison’s untimely death in 1971.
It follows Jim, John, Robby and Ray from the corridors of the UCLA film school, to the stages of sold-out arenas, and makes use of rare recordings and beautifully preserved footage of concerts, home movies and drunken studio sessions.
Much of this may never have seen the light of day without DiCillo’s keen eye for editing, in what is clearly a labour of love. With the recent addition of Depp’s narrative, this documentary is a fascinating tribute to one of America’s most iconic and influential rock bands.
