Babel is the last instalment of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s trilogy, joining Amores Perros and 21 Grams, focusing on the random acts of fate that link four individual stories from across the world.
Based in Morocco, Mexico and Japan, inspired by González Iñárritu’s visits to these countries, the film is set in motion by two Moroccan children who have an accident with a hunting rifle.
The story then pulls in the lives of three other families; an American couple visiting Morocco on holiday, their nanny who is desperately trying to get to Mexico to attend her son’s wedding, and a widowed father attempting to reconnect with his daughter in Japan.
With excellent performances from Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett and an international cast, González Iñárritu’s insightful film explores culture, class, global inequality and the consequences of miscommunication.
