The UK’s most northerly music, cinema and creative industries centre, Mareel (the Scottish word for phosphorescence) is sited on the edge of the North Sea on Lerwick’s historic Hay’s Dock quayside beside the Shetland Museum and Archives. It’s a stunning setting for audiences enjoying live performances, theatre productions, film screenings, drinks in the cafe, or just the chance to take in the beautiful view and watch seals, seabirds and otters bobbing past outside.
Mareel has two cinema screens as well as numerous performance, production, education and exhibition spaces and runs a year-round mixed-arts programme of music, craft, theatre, literature, film, dance and visual arts events.
Read more about Mareel in Time Out‘s The 50 Most Beautiful Cinemas in the World list and the Shetland Arts blog and take a tour of the cinema.
