Our regular monthly update featuring the latest news and opportunities for your cinema, festival or film society.

ICO News

  • Applications are now open for Developing Your Film Festival 2022, which is taking place in Edinburgh from 8-12 August. Now in its 11th year, Developing Your Film Festival (DYFF) is our internationally-renowned training programme for film festival professionals. If you want the next edition of your festival to have bigger audiences, a stronger international reputation, and improved sponsorship, this course is for you. Apply by Friday 17 June.
    To find out more, register for one of our open online information sessions taking place on Zoom at 2pm, Tues 31 May  & 12 noon, Mon 6 June.
  • Are you working in or towards a managerial position within film exhibition? We’ve opened applications for this year’s Elevate: Introduction to Leadership training course, a fantastic opportunity to learn practical management skills and make sure your film exhibition career is moving in the right direction. Applications close Friday 17 June.
  • The deadline to register for Young Audiences Screening Days is tomorrow, Friday 27 May! We’ve now announced the final programme for the event, which includes epic fantasy anime The Deer King, a documentary about Lebanon’s first (and only) all-female heavy metal band, plus a fantastic lineup of sessions packed with great ideas on how cinemas can attract and work with young people.   • Available for the first time in stunning new restorations, the films featured in our upcoming tour The Camera is Ours reveal a bigger picture of our national story and show that there were pivotal female influences on the documentary genre from the very beginning. In cinemas from 3 June, get in touch to book it for your venue.
  • We were thrilled to be joined by Terence Davies on the Cinema of Ideas this week to discuss his new work Benediction and his reflections on a long career as one of Britain’s foremost film poets. If you missed the live conversation you can now catch-up with the recording. Make sure you also check out The Terence Davies Trilogy – three astonishing films made at the very start of Davies’ career, available to watch on the Cinema of Ideas until 2 June.
  • We’re hiring! We’re looking for a Marketing and Administration Coordinator to work across our social channels & assist with the marketing, planning & delivery of all ICO activities. Interested? Apply by 30 May.

Opportunities

  • Applications are now open for Screen Scotland’s Film Festival and Screening Fund, which has been launched to support organisations who produce film festivals and screening programmes that increase the reach, depth, and diversity of screen culture for audiences in Scotland. The deadline to apply is 29 November.
  • LGBTQ+ community-led organisations will be able to apply for the next round of funding to run London’s Pride celebrations for the next five years. See details here.
  • There are currently roles available on our Jobs Board at Catford Mews, Bird’s Eye View, Queen’s Film Theatre, the BFI, Film Hub Scotland, Strand Arts Centre, Chapter, and more.
  • The UK government has launched a new £150 million Community Ownership Fund to help ensure that communities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can support and continue benefiting from the local facilities, community assets and amenities most important to them. Prospective applicants can join online information sessions on 8 & 16 June to find out more.
  • Sundance London is taking over Picturehouse Central from 9-12 June and features an industry programme including roundtable meetings, keynotes, masterclasses, panel discussions, and networking sessions.
  • Cinema Rediscovered is looking for aspiring and early career video essay makers and film critics to apply for the 6th edition of the Film Critics’ Workshop dedicated to video essays. Apply by 13 June!
  • Run accessible screenings? Inclusive Cinema want to hear from exhibitors who have tried to engage with marginalised audiences across race, gender, sexuality, disability, class, age and geo-location through their access survey. The results of the survey will help them plan for the future and how best to support more accessible screenings.
  • Can you do it in 90 seconds? You have until 13 June to get your shorts into the Depict short film competition! Submit for free for a chance to win up to £2,500 & things money can’t buy such as career development support.
  • Matchbox Cine’s branded touring package The Second Summer of Cage celebrates 25 years since the first Summer of Cage in 1997 (when Con Air and Face/Off were released in the same month). Read this document for full details of the tour.
  • Fashion and Cinema are looking to partner with independent cinemas on a series of Life Journeys events, which feature on-stage conversations with costume designers of current releases. Visit their site for more information on getting involved.

Upcoming film screenings, festivals & seasons

  • Running at the Barbican throughout June, Journeys across Afro-Futurism speculates on the impact and directions that the cultural aesthetic and the ideas of Afro-Futurism have taken on within the medium of cinema.
  • In solidarity with Ukraine, Sheffield Doc/Fest have announced Password: Palianytsia, a collaborative documentary programme produced in collaboration with Docudays UA and which will launch the British Council and Ukrainian Institute’s UK/Ukraine Season of Culture.
  • The lineup for this year’s Il Cinema Ritrovato (25 June – 3 July) has been announced, with films spread across three strands: The Cinephile’s Heaven, The Time Machine and The Space Machine.
  • Cinema Rediscovered is back from 20–24 July! Check out the highlights on their website, including a series on Women’s Stories from the Global South, a restored version of Laws of Love (one of the world’s first pro-gay documentaries), Menelik Shabazz’s debut feature Burning an Illusion, and much more!
  • We were thrilled to be able to screen Charlie Shackleton’s innovative and ephemeral The Afterlight at Archive Screening Days last year. It’s now getting a UK & Ireland tour this summer.
  • From 18 to 29 May in venues across London, Queer East Film Festival will showcase over 50 LGBTQ+ titles from 17 countries across East & Southeast Asia and beyond, shining a light on what it means to be Asian and queer today.
