Hiu Man Chan
Dr Hiu Man Chan has been nurtured by the vibrant independent cinema culture in the UK since 2006, when she first arrived in the country as an international student from Hong Kong. While studying, she worked at several independent cinemas across different roles, as an usher, box-office assistant, bar manager and even as a projectionist for 35mm. She started to curate special screening seasons and small film festivals alongside her academic endeavours; she compiled the first ever cinema archive in the country for the Phoenix Picturehouse in Oxford when it celebrated its centenary anniversary in 2013. Over the past 15 years, she has been active in film distribution and exhibitions, experimenting with different event cinema ideas which have brought new audiences to local cinemas. Currently, she is the Artistic Director of ‘Odyssey’, an annual film festival in the UK and is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Industries at De Montfort University, Leicester. Lately, she is also a film producer for international projects between the UK and Asia. Hiu Man is committed to serving as a new trustee, and in maintaining the magic of cinema-going for future generations.
