Evicted from his squat, George Hammond seeks refuge at Bellevue Hospital’s Manhattan intake center for homeless men. There, his friendship with a fellow client (Ben Vereen) helps him try to repair his relationship with his estranged daughter (Jena Malone).
Gere’s famous charisma is muted here, but still visible in a powerful and intelligent performance that drives Moverman’s resonant, episodic film; eloquent on the near-invisibility of the homeless to the majority of a city’s population and the loss of selfhood that accompanies exclusion from mainstream society.
