Peter Carstairs’ brooding September is set in 1968 in the racially segregated wheatbelt of outback Australia. Ed is white, Paddy is black. Both are 15 year old boys growing up in a rapidly changing society. Ed and Paddy’s friendship is torn apart when legislation giving equal rights to Aboriginals is introduced upsetting the status quo and fuelling racial tension.
