Australian Film Institute Winner for Best Direction & Best Editing
Paul Moulds is the manager of a youth refuge in inner-city Sydney, open 365 days a year the centre provides help and advice to young people living on the streets. Most of the teenagers that visit the centre are struggling with drug dependency, abuse or abandonment, and have been given up on by society. But for Paul and the centre staff no one is beyond help and compassion.
The filmmakers focus on seven teenagers and the particular issues each grapples with over a two-year period. Among them are teenage parents Emma and Trent, heroin addict Haley, and Darren who has lived on the streets for over a decade. Although at times difficult to watch the dedication and fortitude of the staff at Oasis make the documentary ultimately inspiring and hopeful.
