Over the course of this year, Film Hub South East are running a series of free training sessions to support our members in their work to grow audiences for independent film in the region.

For our next event in the FHSE Training Programme 23/24, we’re focussing on reengaging with audiences that may not have returned to your venue or festival since the COVID-19 pandemic.

We will be joined by Oliver Mantell, Director of Evidence and Insight at The Audience Agency, who will be drawing on their recent audience analysis in combination with the latest data from the Cultural Participation Monitor, to help you identify some actions to bring these audiences back.

Oliver Mantell

Director of Evidence and Insight, The Audience Agency

Oliver leads the Evidence and Insight team, providing insights into cultural audiences to support colleagues and the wider sector. Oliver has worked at The Audience Agency for ten years: previously he worked as a freelance arts research consultant and in similar roles at a regional audience development agency in Yorkshire. Oliver has a BA in English Language and Literature (Lincoln, Oxford) and an MA in Cultural Policy and Management (Sheffield Hallam). He enjoys reading (especially ideas, literary fiction and poetry), writing (poetry), walking (long distance trails), watching (satire, opera, sport) and wondering about audiences, their behaviours and motivations...

How to write a successful funding proposal

Thursday 27th April, 10.30am - 12pm

For our first training event of this programme, we will be focussing on the process of writing a successful funding proposal. To open this session, David Williams, Film Hub South East, will take us through the updated Film Exhibition Fund guidelines for 2023-24, covering any changes from the previous iteration. Following this, we welcome David Burgess, Apollo Fundraising, to talk us through the process of writing a successful funding proposal and how to avoid common pitfalls.

Film Festivals offer film lovers a real sense of an event: screening films before their release, screening fantastic films that won’t be shown nearby again and offering a key chance to meet film talent. But building audience excitement and delivering lots of events in a short period of time is no easy task. As part of Cambridge Film Festival Industry Day, Film Hub South East is organising training sessions for festival professionals within the region. Guest speakers include Jo Comino, Marketing Manager, Borderlines Film Festival and Yi Wang, Festival Director, Queer East.
