Birmingham Indian Film Festival is looking for a Project Manager for their October Festival.
About LIFF
London Indian Film Festival Ltd (LIFF), with Manchester Indian Film Festival (MIFF) and Birmingham Indian Film Festival (BIFF), Leeds Indian Film Festival (LEIFF) are together UK and Europe’s largest Indian film festivals.
We also premiere Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepali and Sri Lankan films and British Asian films, gaming and XR. Over the last 11 years, we have garnered a reputation as the ‘punk rock of Indian film festivals’, presenting a cutting-edge selection of the very best new independent cinema from the Indian subcontinent. The overall festival won ‘Best Live Event’ at the 2022 Asian Media Awards.
About the role
Contract: Mid-August – November 2023 (part-time, flexible, in-person and remote working)
Hours: The role is expected to be approximately 2 days a week until and then full-time 16 October – 7 November, and then 1-2 days a week until the end of November, or until festival production, evaluation and reports are completed.
Fee: £2,000 plus reasonable expenses
The Birmingham Project Manager will be expected:
- To liaise with BIFF Head of Cinema and Producer to develop a plan for the scheduling of the Birmingham festival and monitor this plan in terms of delivery;
- To initiate discussions and relationships with existing and new venue partners in Birmingham and liaise with these partners on the organisation of the festival through to delivery of the festival including cinemas and gaming organisations and community partners;
- To secure screening permissions/certifications for the festival from Council in good time before tickets go on sale;
- To develop and sustain ongoing relationships with targeted communities and identify new community partners;
- To work with the Producer, Head of Cinema BIFF to ensure smooth delivery of films, and assist with the guests’ travelling itineraries
- To work with the Head of Cinema to help coordinate volunteers for the Birmingham based events;
- To work with the festival’s central Marketing and PR consultant to help in the successful delivery of the festival’s marketing objectives especially with regards to the interface between the venues and the Festival’s marketing/PR team;
- To ensure that the reputation of the festival is upheld in terms of high-quality delivery and clear communication with partners, ensuring future goodwill;
- To attend regular meetings of the core festival team (mainly by zoom and occasionally in person);
- To present any expense claims in a clear manner with receipts attached, no later than one month after the festival end date;
- To report to the Festival Producer any issues or problems with partners in a timely manner;
- To undertake any other reasonable responsibilities with regard to this role.
Person specification
- At least 12 months proven Project Management experience working within a cinema, film festival or other cultural venues.
- Must be based in Birmingham or close surroundings.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as high-level interpersonal skills.
- A self-starter with organisational and administrative skills including numeracy, literacy and fluency with office IT.
- High attention to detail, can manage own work-flow, and confidential or sensitive information.
- Can work flexibly by managing the changing task priorities and problem shoot.
- Proven budget management experience, maintaining updating spend via an Excel spreadsheet.
- Demonstrated ability and tools to organise workload, use electronic communication systems and email, plus manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- An energetic approach to and understanding of the need for communication with a wide range of partners, stakeholders, teams and internal and external colleagues.
- Proven passion for film exhibition and moving image.
- Can work evenings and weekends as part of the job role commitment.
- Awareness of South Asian culture/film culture is an advantage, but not essential.
- Awareness of UK South Asian minority communities eg. Deaf, LGBTQIA+, language groups, an advantage, but not essential.
