ICO News
- If animation is a medium in which the only limit is your imagination, why is there such a limited range of disabled stories? Streaming on the Cinema of Ideas until 6 April, Visibly Animated is a film season bringing disabled animators and stories to the forefront.
- This month we were delighted welcome six new Trustees to the ICO Board! Joining the Board are: Ayo Akingbade, Harry Kalfayan, Will Massa, Emily McDonald, Eleanor McGrath and Ameet Parekh. The new Trustees significantly expand the range of experience and diversity of our Board and we’re very much looking forward to working with them.
- Thank you to everyone who joined us for Spring Screening Days this month, whether in person or online. This was our highest-attended hybrid Screening Days event yet, and we hope many of you will be joining us for some of our other events later this year. We’ll be announcing dates for these very soon!
- We’re looking for paid guest curator contributions to our next Young Audiences Screening Days event. We want to hear from people inside and outside the film exhibition sector who have ideas for sessions or film programmes that will help bring young audiences into cinemas to watch independent film. Apply by 28 April.
- We’re currently recruiting for a BFI NETWORK Talent Executive to join our team on a part-time basis. The post-holder will be responsible for assessing applications for the BFI NETWORK Short Film Fund and working with partners to support and develop emerging filmmakers in the Film Hub South East region. The deadline to apply is 19 April.
- We’re looking for new pieces for our blog! If you have an idea for an article about film exhibition which you’d like us to commission, please read our blog guidelines in the first instance. If you think your pitch is a good fit, please get in touch.
Opportunities
- Film Feels returns for 2022, once again celebrating film’s ability to transport us and illuminate ideas. FAN will be providing funding of up to £10,000 for ambitious curated programmes and events which respond to this year’s theme of ‘Curious’. Apply by Monday 18 April.
- Applications are also open for FAN’s UK-wide Screen Heritage Changing Times programme, which is running under the same theme of ‘Curious’. They will be funding archive film events across the UK which celebrate the human desire to learn more about the people and things around us – apply by 19 August.
- There are currently roles available at Film London, Bohemia Media, MUBI, Vertigo Films, Showroom Workstation, Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival and more.
- Matchbox Cineclub have been busy developing Sidecard, a searchable database of access materials created for films, developed for use by distributors, exhibitors, filmmakers and audiences. Launching soon!
- Submissions are now open for Depict ’22 – Watershed’s ultra-short film competition part of Encounters Film Festival committed to uncovering emerging filmmaking talent since 1998. Deadline for entries is 13 June.
- Watershed is also inviting exhibitors to showcase the Depict ’21 winning shorts free of charge across the UK (and beyond on request) following their premiere at Encounters. The films are available for both in-venue and online screenings, watch the winners and find out more.
- The FLAMIN Fellowship, a major development scheme for early-career artist filmmakers, is now open for applications. The scheme aims to support the most exciting, innovative and challenging moving image projects with £2,500 in seed development finance and bespoke mentoring opportunities. Apply by 17 May.
- BAFTA Connect is a new BAFTA membership for emerging to mid-level creatives in film, games and television (inc. those working in exhibition & distribution). The deadline for applications is Thursday 28 April.
- Join London’s Screen Archives for the third edition of their Screen Heritage conference: a day of compelling presentations, innovative approaches, and discussions about archive film.
- Cardiff Animation Festival returns from 7 April in Cardiff and online. Guests include Oscar-nominee Joanna Quinn, plus crew from His Dark Materials, Aardman Animations, Flee and City of Ghosts.
- Il Cinema Ritrovato returns to Bologna this year from 25 June – 3 July. Check out a preview of their programme here.
