- Do you have ideas to help bring diverse audiences into cinemas? We’re looking for paid guest curator contributions for Inclusion and Diversity Screening Days (taking place in late September) to develop contextualised film programmes and/or curated sessions aimed at increasing the diversity of both the audiences and workforce of film. The deadline to submit your idea/s is Monday 23 August. Find out more here.
- This month we held our screening and panel event for Travels with Tove, an under-seen documentary which provides an intimate look at the life of Moomin creator Tove Jansson through her home movies with partner Tuulikki Pietilä. Writing for our blog, So Mayer discusses the expressive beauty of this globetrotting film.
- Also on our blog this month we heard from Laura Kloss, founder of Lightbox Cinema, about her work teaching and inspiring young audiences to learn more about cinema heritage.
- We were saddened to hear of the passing of our friend and collaborator Menelik Shabazz. Scroll down to read the tributes paid to him by friends and colleagues earlier this month. We have made two archive films from our 2020 Second Sight Tour, including Menelik’s 1985 film The People’s Account and D. Elmina Davis’s Omega Rising Women of Rastafari, available for exhibitors to book for online or in-venue screenings. See details here.
- We’re looking to commission new writing for our blog. If you have an idea for an article on film exhibition which you’d like to pitch, please read our guidelines.
Opportunities
- Round 3 of the Culture Recovery Fund for Independent Cinemas in England is now open for applications. This round of funding will have two strands of emergency funding, depending on whether organisations have previously received support from the fund or not.
- Japan 2021 is a UK-wide season of Japanese cinema, from early silents to contemporary innovation and everything in between. Funding applications are currently open for organisations to deliver programmes and events celebrating Japanese film.
- This year’s Cinema Rediscovered festival is now live and running until Sunday 1 August. If you’re not in Bristol to catch a screening then they’ve got a free programme of talks and panels taking place online too.
- There are currently roles available at Cambridge Film Festival, Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, UK Jewish Film, Broadway, the BFI, HOME and more.
- This year’s Distributor Slate Days returns on 14 and 15 September 2021 for a live event (with supporting activity online) of slate presentations and opportunities to meet with distributors, exhibitors and partners.
- The Sundance Film Festival: London is coming to cinemas across the UK for the first time, giving audiences across the country the chance to see three anticipated films from the festival, including Zola, The Nest and Writing With Fire. See a list of screenings here.
- Launched by Creative England and the Creative Industries Federation, the UK Creative Industries report explores the power of the UK’s creative industries to regenerate places, rebuild the economy, drive innovation and create jobs around the UK.
- Cinema For All has launched Back to the Big Screen, a new brochure providing exciting programme ideas for community cinemas and film societies.
- The Audience Agency is looking for 10-15 action research projects for a new heritage opportunity which offers funding and support for projects that use digital technology to engage communities with archiving or archive collections. Find out more here.
