Making Cinemas Environmentally Sustainable (online)

04/02/2021 - 11/02/2021

10am - 12:30pm

We have reached capacity for this training programme. If you’d like to be put on the waiting list for the upcoming February sessions, please email us at training@independentcinemaoffice.org.uk.

In the midst of the ongoing climate crisis, how can cinemas reduce their own environmental impacts and inspire action in their communities?

Over recent years we have seen colleagues across the sector develop and deliver pioneering work to address this challenge.

Working with Julie’s Bicycle, the global charity working at the intersection between culture and environmental sustainability, we have developed a free downloadable toolkit that showcases some of this work alongside key information about climate change issues, regulations and legal obligations, with ‘top tips’ to help cinemas implement these ideas in their own venues.

To support the launch of this resource and aid further learning, the ICO is offering a free training course on how to make your cinema environmentally sustainable, delivered by Julie’s Bicycle.

This course will run online twice, with each training course made up of two sessions. You can sign up to Workshop 1 (Parts 1 & 2) or Workshop 2 (Parts 1 & 2).

  • Workshop 1 (Part 1) – 14 January 2021 (10am – 12:30pm)
  • Workshop 1 (Part 2) – 21 January 2021 (10am – 12:30pm)
  • Workshop 2 (Part 1) – 4 February 2021 (10am – 12:30pm)
  • Workshop 2 (Part 2) – 11 February 2021 (10am – 12:30pm)

Topics covered:

  • Carbon literacy and environmental impact reduction – tailored around the specific challenges and opportunities experienced by cinemas.
  • Supply chains – looking at the principles of good procurement, influencing catalysing wider change through our choices and opportunities for new business models, research & development projects and material and social innovation.
  • Strategy and governance – linking environmental sustainability to organisational values and purpose and approaches to creative climate leadership.

About Julie’s Bicycle

Building skills and capacity in the creative sector is at the heart of what Julie’s Bicycle do. Over 12 years of work they have developed a strong and tested environmental literacy training framework with a sector-specific resource base, which has successfully helped embed good practice and accelerated climate action. This framework is rooted in the global Paris Agreement, aiming to limit global warming to below two degrees Celsius against pre-industrial levels; the Sustainable Development Goals; the UK’s Climate Change Act committing to reducing emissions by 80% by 2050.
