Join us for an informal information session covering the range of film formats available to exhibitors, and how you can use them to bring a wider variety of films to your audiences.
About the course
As more and more community cinemas and film societies are increasingly exploiting the benefits of digital cinema technology, there is a demand for greater standards of presentation and the technical know-how to upgrade from DVD, with many venues exploring the benefits of Bluray and improved audio systems, or the industry standard DCP (or a Digital Cinema Package).
In the BFI’s recently published 5 year strategy, BFI2022, it was announced that 100 new 35mm prints of classic British and International Cinema will be created in an effort to ‘bring films to cinema audiences as the filmmakers intended’, which will likely require renewed training in 35mm projection. By ensuring exhibitors have the knowledge and means to screen films on a variety of formats, we believe a greater variety of films will be made available to audiences.
The ICO, in partnership with Film Hub North, are running an informal information session and presentation that will cover the basics of the film exhibition formats available to exhibitors – equipping you with the confidence to explore the possibilities of screening on different formats – from 16mm right through to 4K DCP. Led by Paul Willmott, ICO Technical Ambassador and Technical Manager of Saffron Screen, the Film Format Workshop aims to equip exhibitors with practical tips and ideas to approach common problems related to format, and ensure they are projecting to the highest quality. Utilising Sheffield Showroom’s capacity to screen on a variety of formats (16mm, 35mm, DVD, Bluray and even LaserDisc!), Paul will demonstrate examples of good practice and respond to individual queries in a Q&A session.
This event is open to all types of exhibitors, from small community cinemas and film clubs to mixed arts venues and independent cinemas.
