Hundreds of cinemas, film festivals and community screens have joined us at our Young Audience Screening Days over the years, and we’re delighted to be organising our next event at HOME Manchester on Thursday 2 May.
You can expect preview film screenings and capacity-building sessions, with key conversations about engaging audiences aged 16-30 and younger to help you grow or develop a strong young audience offer at your venue.

It gave me many ideas to bring back and discuss further with my organisation, the interaction and listening to other exhibitors share their experiences was very fruitful
Could happily have spent another day of the same!
Young Audiences Screening Day 2018 delegates
Programme
Keynote: Jackie Edwards
Head of BFI’s new Young Audiences Content Fund Jackie Edwards will be joining us for a keynote covering her ambitions for the fund and the wider opportunities for programming content for young audiences and engaging and nurturing talent. The Young Audiences Content Fund is a major new pilot being delivered by the BFI as part of UK government support for high-quality content for children and young audiences to be broadcast on UK Public Service Broadcasters (PSB).
Developing Young Film Programmers' Groups
Looking for new ideas for your Young Programmers' Groups? Film Hub South East's Young Programmers' Co-ordinator, Julia Andrews-Clifford will host a panel of young programmers discussing how to develop your group's activity to better reach everyone in your community.
Successful campaigns for attracting young audiences
Come and listen to key exhibitors sharing learnings from recent marketing and audience development campaigns aimed at reaching young audiences. Panellists are: Ollie Jenkins, Marketing & Communications Manager, Hyde Park Picture House; Jenna Roberts, Marketing Manager and Industry Producer, London Short Film Festival; and Rachael Welsh, Senior Marketing Manager, HOME.
Discovery Shorts
We’re delighted to welcome Mike Tait, Discovery Film Festival Producer and Dundee Contemporary Arts' Cinema Youth Development Officer, to present a selection of shorts from their various Discovery collections and give an overview of how these films fit into DCA’s offer for younger audiences.
BFI FAN Young Audiences: ticketing schemes, drivers and barriers for young people attending the cinema
As BFI FAN Young Audiences lead, Film Hub London is working on initiatives to support exhibitors in attracting young audiences (16-30) to their venues, including a possible BFI FAN-wide ticketing scheme for this age group. In this session, FAN Young Audiences Co-ordinator Moira McVean will outline their research findings and their current proposal to gather your thoughts and feedback.
MASSIVE: Championing British Cinema
In August 2018, MASSIVE launched with the single purpose of championing British cinema to 16-24 year olds across the UK. A lifestyle brand, not an industry initiative, MASSIVE gives young people the chance to experience the best of British film, together, in the cinema. In this session, David Kapur and Alex Huxley of ourscreen, who have delivered the pilot, will discuss its successes; the challenges of connecting to young people, and project learnings on how exhibitors can engage younger audiences.
Young Programmers: Networking
Open to Young Film Programmers aged 18-30 only, this networking session is a chance to meet other YPs from across the UK, share experiences, swap ideas and discuss some of the challenges of building young audiences at your venue. Chaired by Julia Andrews-Clifford, Young Programmers Coordinator, Film Hub South East.

FAQs
How do I register on the day?
Registration will be held in the morning at HOME. You will be issued with a badge which will be your entry pass into all screenings and sessions.
The registration area will be staffed by the ICO throughout the event. We’ll also be on hand to offer advice on topics including programming, distribution, audience development and much more.
When do the screenings happen?
A precise schedule is yet to be confirmed, but screenings and sessions will likely run between 9:00am and 6:00pm.
Where are the screenings held?
Screenings will be held in Cinemas 1, 2 and 3 at HOME.
Will there be any other activities in addition to the screenings?
There will be workshops, case studies, panels and presentations, along with a drinks reception in the evening.
Is there somewhere to get drinks and food onsite?
Refreshments and lunch will be provided on the day. You can also visit HOME’s café-bar and restaurant (ground and first floors) and nearby shops and restaurants if you prefer.
How accessible is HOME Manchester?
HOME Manchester’s Box Office and Bookshop are fully accessible and situated in the foyer. The cinema screens are situated on the top floor and are fully accessible via the lift, with wheelchair access in every screen. The café and bar areas on each floor of the building are fully accessible. There are also accessible toilets available on each floor. Wheelchair spaces are available in all areas of Theatre 1 (stalls, circle and gallery). For further details on accessibility at HOME, click here.
How do you select films for the programme?
At this event we’ll be looking for films for children and young audiences (from 16-30), bringing you a selection of the best independent titles coming into distribution so you’re empowered to make informed choices for young audiences during the summer holiday months. Alongside screenings, you’ll also have the opportunity to listen to expert speakers and case studies on young audience development and best practice programming and cinema marketing for children and young people.
Why can only four members of my organisation attend?
As we only have a limited capacity, we now limit the number of passes for any one organisation to four. This ensures that the largest number of organisations can benefit from our Screening Days events. Attendees must also be engaged in one of the following areas within their organisation: programming, marketing, education, audience development, or on the selection committee of a film society/club. If you are unsure of your eligibility, email info@independentcinemaoffice.org.uk.
Can I tweet or share reviews or comments on the films in public?
No. While we appreciate your enthusiasm (or otherwise) for films you see at Screening Days, the terms that we receive the films under completely prohibit any social media or film forum discussion of films in the Screening Days programme. Distributors and the ICO monitor social media channels for discussion of the films. Please do feel free to discuss the films in person with other delegates, and if you’d like to talk about the event in general on social media you can find us at @ICOtweets #ScreeningDays.

- If you feel uncomfortable, or someone behaves inappropriately towards you, or you witness something inappropriate, please report it to a member of ICO staff or email info@independentcinemaoffice.org.uk. Your complaint will be treated with confidence and discretion. We are happy to help you and can help report inappropriate behaviour to the authorities, where necessary or address the problem ourselves where more appropriate. We reserve the right to refuse entry to anyone who does not comply with our code of conduct. This code of conduct applies both in person and online.
