Written and directed by John Sayles, Honeydripper is a fable about the birth of rock’n’roll.
Set in 1950s Alabama, the proprietor of the Honeydripper Lounge Tyrone Purvis (Danny Glover) is deep in debt and losing customers all the time.
Desperate to bring back the crowds he decides to lay off his long-time blues singer Bertha Mae, and hire a famous guitar player, Guitar Sam, for a one night only gig to save the club. The only problem is Purvis doesn’t have any money to book Guitar Sam, isn’t sure where to find him, and doesn’t know if he’ll show up anyway.
Sayles continues to examine the complexities and shifting identities of American sub-cultures in this new film. Whilst the plot may seem somewhat familiar the film is enjoyable and endearing with great performances from the cast, especially newcomer Gary Clark Jr. The soundtrack will also keep your toes tapping throughout.
