The Gulbenkian Cinema is Kent's independent film theatre showing new mainstream and non-mainstream releases as well as archive and foreign language films not otherwise available in the region.
The Gulbenkian Cinema undertook a major refurbishment in 2007: With funding from the Film Council and the University of Kent, the cinema was fitted with 300 brand new cinema seats with greater access and seating for people with limited mobility and wheel chair users. Combined with new décor, a new screen, new projectors and Dolby digital surround sound, a wonderful facility was created for the students and the communities of Canterbury and East Kent
2007 also saw the launch of the GulbCineClub which provides benefits to film lovers such as special club screenings, social functions, talks, guest speakers and post-screening discussions. Guest speakers have included Film London CEO Adrian Wootton, Sir David Frost to Q&A the film Frost/Nixon and legendary director Nicolas Roeg will be appearing at the Cinema in February 2010.
The Gulbenkian Cinema has also been home to a variety of festivals including Canterbury Anifest, WorldFest and Festival Latinoamericano.
The Cinema is situated within The Gulbenkian which is a vibrant centre based at the University of Kent campus in Canterbury. It comprises a Theatre, Café Bar and Gallery showcasing local artist's work.
